A Lynn man was seriously injured when the moped which he was operating was struck by an allegedly drunk driver. The collision took place at the intersection of North Street and Liberty Hill Avenue in Salem at approximately 1:30 a.m. this past Saturday morning.
Following the accident, the driver of the moped was transported to North Shore Medical Center before being transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
The operator of the moped was struck by an allegedly drunk Peabody woman driving a Volkswagen Passat. Police reported that they smelled an odor of alcohol on the 25-year-old driver’s breath and that her speech was slurred and her eyes were both bloodshot and glassy.
The operator of the Volkswagen failed two of the three sobriety tests administered by the police and was placed under arrest. The driver is being charged with her second offense of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, as well as operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol with serious bodily injury, a felony offense.
In addition to the failed sobriety tests, the local police preformed a Breathalyzer test during her booking. According to the police, the results registered at 0.17 percent, which is more than twice the legal limit. The 25-year-old driver had her driver’s license seized and the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles was notified of the incident.
